Join us in making a difference in John’s life and let’s create a brighter future for him, just as he has selflessly done for others.”

Meet John Bohanek, a resilient individual whose life took a dramatic turn when Hurricane Ian destroyed his beloved Pine Island Home. Born in 1943, in the picturesque town of Evergreen Park, Illinois, John grew up under the watchful eye of his father, an air raid warden in the bustling city of Chicago, and the loving care of his mother, a devoted homemaker. Alongside his sister, John learned the importance of family and the strength that comes from unity.

As life unfolded, John experienced the joys and challenges that come with love and parenthood. With three children who have settled in Illinois and eight precious grandchildren, John cherishes the moments spent with his family.

Displaying unwavering loyalty to his country, John dedicated three years of his life to serve in the Army. Although he never saw combat, he actively participated in historical events such as the Berlin crisis and the Cuban crisis, gaining valuable perspective along the way.

Following his honorable discharge, John embarked on a path of professional growth. Starting with a humble apprenticeship in the steel mills right after completing school, he honed his skills and expertise, eventually becoming a proficient field service engineer for an instrument manufacturer. Fueled by an entrepreneurial spirit, John established his own business, specializing in instrument service and repair. His dedication and commitment earned him a reputation as a reliable and skilled technician.

Seeking a peaceful and fulfilling retirement, John found solace and tranquility on Pine Island. Embracing the close-knit community, he became a trusted and invaluable handyman, always ready to lend a helping hand. His selflessness extended beyond his professional skills, as he dedicated countless hours to various charitable endeavors, making a lasting impact on the island’s residents.

For the past 23 and a half years, John has called Pine Island his home. However, in the wake of the devastating hurricane Ian, John now faces the heartbreaking possibility of homelessness. On July 31, 2024, the Florida Division of Emergency Management will take the trailer they temporarily placed on his property, as the Non-Congregate Shelter program is ending. John is unable to have his house rebuilt and since Hurricane Ian destroyed his house, he has been declared legally blind as a result of macular degeneration.

This is our opportunity to come together and support John Bohanek during his time of need. By raising funds for a trailer, we can ensure that he has a safe and comfortable place to live, offering him a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos. Join us in making a difference in John’s life and let’s create a brighter future for him, just as he has selflessly done for others.
